We have all heard the saying, “Accidents happen,” but when it comes to cleaning with chemicals accidents can be life threating. Before using any sort of chemical you should read the MSDS sheet to be aware of any safety warnings associated with the product. Here are some tips on how to safely clean with chemicals.

1. Beware of bleach. Bleach is responsible for the most cleaning related chemical accidents every year. This is because it is so commonly used by homeowners for residential cleaning. The fumes alone can cause everything from headaches and dizziness to nausea and vomiting. If bleach gets on your skin or anywhere else on your body wash it off as soon as possible because it can cause severe chemical burns.
2. Wear gloves and goggles when cleaning with chemicals. Harmful chemicals can be found in many cleaning products that can be purchased at your local grocery store and if your skin or eyes become exposed you risk chemical burns and damage to your eyes. The fumes of Bleach alone can cause irritation to your eyes. So next time you are cleaning with chemicals wear gloves and goggles to protect your skin and eyes.
3. Open your windows. When cleaning with bleach or any other chemicals one way to prevent fumes from harming you or your family is to open your windows and let in a breeze. Fresh air will clean the air in your home by removing potentially toxic fumes, dust and odors.
4. Don’t mix chemicals. Mixing bleach with ammonia can create toxic fumes. This can be fatal. Never mix two cleaning chemicals unless you know it is safe to do.  Common ways people make this mistake are by reusing old containers which still contain traces of the old chemical. Also never pour your chemicals down a drain because even after rinsing they still can mix and create harmful fumes.
5. Don’t spill. Spilling chemicals such as bleach can be very damaging to your clothes, floors and carpets. This is because bleach has a staining property that will alter the color of whatever it touches. If you have pets or kids, the residue of the spill may put them in danger. So be aware of yourself and your surroundings at all times when cleaning with chemicals to prevent an accidental spill.
6. Go Green. There are many chemical based products available for cleaning, but if you go online you might find some green alternatives. For example, distilled white vinegar due to its acidity can be used as a green alternative for cleaning dirt, stains and grime. Remember just because a cleaning product is green doesn’t mean it can’t be potentially harmful so always remember to take necessary precautions when cleaning with any chemical.
